Fun Dog-Friendly Summer Activities

Pets

Get outside and have some fun this summer, and don’t forget to bring your dog! Plan the perfect dog-friendly summer adventure. Check out these ideas for enjoying the warm weather with your dog.

Go for a Hike

Get outside and explore while getting exercise. Hitting the trails is a great way to get fresh air and plenty of steps. Research the route and select a manageable distance and activity level for you and your dog. Inexperienced hikers and older pups are more likely to enjoy a flatter trail, while more adventurous pets and owners may want to consider hikes with elevation gain.

Try to hike early in the morning or in the evening, when the temperature isn’t so high. Keep your pet leashed at all times and bring water, a bowl, and bags to clean up after your pet. Also, remember to check your pet for ticks afterward, depending on the area.

Bark in the Park

Going to a baseball game is a quintessential summer activity, and it’s one you may be able to enjoy with your dog. Many teams host a dog-friendly promotion, often called Bark in the Park. These dog games are a great way to get outside, meet other dogs, and have a fun evening.

Baseball games are often loud, with the action on the field, music, and other fans. Make sure your dog is up for this activity and consider something else if a ball game isn’t a good fit. Many minor league teams host a bark-in-the-park game. Always double-check the team’s rules and policies about dog-friendly sections, leash requirements, and more.

Learn Local History

Be a tourist and check out a local park, monument, or historical site. Double-check the venue is dog-friendly before you go. Oftentimes, buildings and burial sites do not allow dogs, so check the policy and follow the rules. Many facilities have trails so that you can explore and enjoy the area.

Share a Treat

Cool off on a hot day with a refreshing treat. Many fruits are safe for dogs, including watermelon, cantaloupe, strawberries, blueberries, and apples. Wash and slice up some snacks for you and your pup to enjoy together, or freeze the cut fruit ahead of time for an extra-special treat. Confirm that a food item is safe for dogs before feeding anything to your pet. Make sure pieces are bite-sized, and remove stems or seeds as necessary.

Cool Down

Going for a swim is a great way to cool down on a warm day and a great form of exercise. If your dog is an experienced swimmer, visit a dog-friendly beach or a lake where dogs can swim. Remember to bring a tennis ball or toys that float if your pup enjoys retrieving.  Swimming can be tiring, so give your dog breaks, especially if the temperature is very high or if your pet is older.

If you want to enjoy the water without swimming, fill a kiddie pool or set up a sprinkler in your backyard. Your dog can frolic in the water without taking a dip.
